I M In Love With A Mule

Submitted by: Windy Reigns

Now that the cold, rainy days of winter have been replaced by the mild temperatures of spring, I am reminded why living in California is so desirable. The hillsides are cloaked in vibrant green grass and dotted with wildflowers. Our beaches are impeccably clean and belong to the locals while they are still too chilly for water sport seeking tourists. On the horizon stand our snow capped mountains that reflect the peachy-pink sunsets and velvet blue night skies. It truly is heaven on earth. With all this beauty just outside our door, my family and I have begun spending much of our weekends outdoors. We have enjoyed impromptu picnics in meadows alongside Ortega Highway and day trips to Big Bear to engage in snowball fights. There have been full and exhausting days spent peddling our beach cruisers back and forth on the boardwalk between the Huntington, Newport and Balboa Piers, followed by evening marshmallow roasts at the fire pits on the beach. Yes, life is good.

For each of these daytrips we pack an arsenal of paraphernalia; Frisbees, a deck of cards, blankets, beach towels, sunscreen, lip balm, snacks, juice boxes, water bottles and so on. Of all these little necessities, my most favorite is the Ice Mule. My husband picked up our Mule at a hunting/fishing outlet (which is funny because he would never hurt a fly). He thought it might be something we could use someday. He was right. This amazing cooler bag has kept our refreshments icy cold for ridiculously long periods of time. In fact, I recently discovered that it had been left in the car overnight and was not looking forward to removing the deviled eggs that surely would emit noxious fumes upon removal from their Tupperware tomb. To my surprise the eggs and the water bottles inside the bag were still cold to the touch, even though they had been in the bag for over 24 hours! The Ice Mule now joins me on jaunts to the grocery store. I transfer the cold items into my Mule and continue my errands around town before returning home. Quite simply, I love this thing.

Soon the lush green hills will turn golden brown and the beaches will become a crowded, noisy mecca for the masses. Traffic on Pacific Coast Highway will be reduced to a slow crawl due to tourists looking for the closest spot to the beach (hint, these don t exist in the summer). When we do decide to fight the crowds, you can bet that our Mule will be with us to keep our beverages, snacks, sunscreen and temperaments cool. On the ultra hot 90 degree days, which we always get toward the end of summer, it will be time to sit by the pool with our soda pop, ice tea and lemonade. Even though the kitchen will be only be a few steps away I am planning on using the Ice Mule poolside. In fact I might not leave my lounge chair all summer long.
